Senator Tom Killion (R-9) today announced the Delaware County recipients of a grant program that provides fresh fruit and vegetables to schoolchildren around the country.

This year, six local schools received funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.  The program provides funding for the purchase of fruits and vegetables in schools where at least 50% of the student population is eligible for free and reduced price meals.

Close to 200 Pennsylvania elementary schools received nearly $5 million in grant funding for this program for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.

“I am pleased that our local schools are receiving funding to promote healthy living choices,” said Killion.  “Fruits and vegetables are vital to the health of growing children, and we should take every opportunity possible to make fresh produce available in our schools,” he added.
