A resolution introduced by Senator Tom Killion (R-Chester and Delaware) designating the week of February 17 through February 23, 2020, as Penn State THON week in Pennsylvania was unanimously adopted last week.
“THON is the largest student-run philanthropic endeavor in the world, both in revenue and volunteer participation,” noted Killion, a Penn State alumnus. “It is remarkable accomplishment for the Penn State student body.”
Held annually each February, THON is a 46 hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon. With the support of students from across the Commonwealth, and beyond, this yearlong effort benefits the Four Diamonds at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Whether to cover cancer treatment costs or to fund research for a cure, THON has raised $168 million for the benefit of those affected by childhood cancer since its inception in 1973.
This year, THON will begin on the evening of Friday, February 21st and conclude on Sunday, February 23rd and involves more than 16,500 student volunteers.
“It’s important my fellow Senators and I recognize the students for their commitment to raise funds, increase awareness and provide emotional support to children and families fighting childhood cancer,” said Killion.
