$2.5 million has been awarded for transportation-related projects in Middletown and Nether Providence townships Senator Tom Killion (R-Chester & Delaware) announced today.
“These grants will improve traffic congestion and make the affected roadways safer for drivers and pedestrians,” said Killion of the grants awarded from the state’s Multimodal Transportation Fund by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. “I’m pleased the authority recognized the value of these projects to the local area and the commonwealth.”
Middletown Township will receive $2 million for the construction of a loop road near the intersection of PA 452 and US 1. The project will include two new signalized intersections approximately 500 feet south and 400 feet east of PA 452 and US 1. The improvements will reduce traffic delays and promote safer transit for vehicles and pedestrians. A pedestrian trail will also be constructed adjacent to the loop road.
Nether Providence Township will receive $500,000 for the installation of sidewalks along Providence Road. Replacing an existing, incomplete macadam sidewalk, the new, ADA accessible sidewalk will stretch for approximately two miles from Plush Mill Road to Chester Road. The project also includes pedestrian signal upgrades.
The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth. Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus packages. The CFA holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
“Providing efficient, safe roadways is a fundamental responsibility of state government. These projects are worthy of the grants that have been awarded, and I’m proud to have supported them,” said Killion.
