Victoria’s Law Seeks to End Puppy Mill Cruelty in Pennsylvania
WHAT:
Downton Abbey actress and longtime animal advocate, Lesley Nicol, is visiting Harrisburg to show support for Victoria’s Law – the Pet Retail Sales bill that would prohibit the sale of commercially raised dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores across Pennsylvania. The bill was recently introduced in the Senate by Senators Tom Killion (R-9) and Andy Dinniman (D-16), plus 26 cosponsors, and referred to Judiciary Committee.
Nicol will attend a meet and greet with Senators Killion and Dinniman, both co-sponsors of the bill, as well as other Senators who will be in attendance to show their support.
WHY:
Victoria’s Law is named for a German shepherd who was mercilessly overbred for 10 years at a puppy mill and passed along an incurable, genetic disease to more than 150 puppies. Terminally ill and unable to walk, Victoria was rescued by Finding Shelter Animal Rescue when the puppy mill had no further use for her.
The goal of this legislation, designed with Victoria in mind, is to move the Pennsylvania pet market away from inhumane operations that treat animals like breeding machines and commercial commodities, while simultaneously protecting the consumer.
